“Audition for a Role in This Timeless Holiday Favorite!”

For the past 15 years, MainStage Academy of Dance | School of Classical Ballet has delighted audiences with our enchanting performances of the Nutcracker Ballet. Whether you’re an experienced performer or dream of becoming a graceful ballerina, we invite you to audition for our annual production. With roles tailored for dancers of all levels, from novices to seasoned artists, this is your opportunity to shine on the prestigious main stage of the Oconomowoc Arts Center.

NUTCRACKER AUDITION INFORMATION!

Dancers ages 5 & Up

Must have taken at least 1 year of ballet and must be currently enrolled in a dance studio!

Date: September 21st, 2024

Times:

12:00-1:15 PM – ages 5-7

1:30-2:45 PM –ages 8-10

3:30-6:00 PM– ages 11 & up + pointe dancers

The audition fee is $25 which will be applied to your participation fee if you or your dancer is cast in the show. This is to cover expenses for the audition day.
Arrive 1/2 hour before the audition to complete the registration process.
Each student will sign in their name and contact information and will be assigned a number to pin on their leotard.
All dancers must be registered for the audition via the provided link: https://wedancemainstage.com/nutracker-auditions/
We encourage the dancers to wear a black leotard, pink tights and pink ballet shoes for the audition. However, if you do not already own a black leotard you may wear your class leotard color.
After the auditions, casting notifications will be completed and sent to parents September 23rd. via email.
Subsequent rehearsals will be held at MSAD on Saturdays and/or Sundays between 1:00 PM and 6:00 PM. (specific details TBA)
All dancers must be available and committed to the rehearsal schedule.
NUTCRACKER! A Magical Christmas Ballet only permits one (1) missed rehearsal (with written excuse and notice).
Children must be on time for rehearsals and promptness in picking up children is greatly appreciated.
Not all dancers who audition will be selected, auditioning does not guarantee a role in the production, but we welcome every aspiring dancer to showcase their talent.

History of the Nutcracker Ballet

Taking a closer look at the history of this magical ballet beloved around the world. For many people, attending a performance of “The Nutcracker” is a holiday tradition and an introduction to the world of classical ballet and music.

The story of The Nutcracker originally derives from “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King,” by E.T.A. Hoffmann, which was subsequently adapted by renowned French author Alexandre Dumas as “The Story of a Nutcracker” in France in 1844. In 1890, the Russian composer Tchaikovsky was commissioned to compose a double bill that featured the opera Iolanta, and the Nutcracker ballet. The composer teamed up with ballet master Marius Petipa of the Imperial Ballet, with whom he had also worked on “The Sleeping Beauty,” to create what would become one of the world’s most popular classical ballets. While the premier was critically acclaimed, it was not until after Tchaikovsky’s death that that the ballet grew to become a treasured holiday tradition with George Balanchine’s 1954 production with the New York City Ballet.

Since its creation, the Nutcracker has been a great source of inspiration and has been adapted and reimagined by MainStage Academy of Dance’s Artistic Director Eddy Bray and countless other choreographers around the world, bringing joy and amazement to audiences spanning decades. This cornerstone of classical music and ballet has truly become one of the most cherished holiday traditions of all time, providing an unforgettable spark to the holiday season.
